If there’s one saving grace about living in New England, it would have to be the three weeks of perfect weather that occur right around the end of September-early October. The kind of days where you step outside and the world smells clean and the slight briskness of the day reminds you to bring along a sweater. These are the days that were made for apple picking. So we obliged, and picked apples (adders as Alex calls them) at a quaint, little, family-run, organic farm in Harvard, Mass.

It was a beautiful setting and we were able to find some great red delicious and blushing gold apples. We immediately turned them into one of the best apples pies we’ve ever had via this recipe (Note: Cut back both sugars to 3/4-cup).

So we were going to stroll around Walden Pond today. We brought the backpack carrier and everything.

Since it now takes three and a half hours to get out of the house and we have a window of about three hours between morning and afternoon nap, it didn’t quite happen. Alex was getting tired, not to mention he was a little sick. Instead, we decided not to waste the $17 in gas and at least spend the afternoon strolling around Concord Center. It was kind of cool because that’s where we were married and we haven’t been there since.

Alex got hungry along the way.

[flickr photo=2879678682]

Daddy ended up being the pack mule.

Alex ate grass, since the toes he had in the car weren’t enough.

[flickr photo=2878870659]

But, it couldn’t have been a better afternoon…

[flickr photo=2879713552]

[flickr photo=2879722214]

In an effort to brainwash Alex into believing swimming is the coolest, we signed Alex up for swimming lessons at the local YMCA. It’s actually a really nice, brand new YMCA with a kickin’ pool and an awesome play area for little kids.

Asides aside, he had a great time in the pool. They sang songs, played motorboat, and jumped off the side. He seemed to get the hang of the kicking, but not the arm scoops. He is totally enthralled with the drainage reservoir on the side of the pool. The kid could watch water go down a drain for hours. We’re thinking of taking him to Australia just to mess with him.

We found out sort of last minute that the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox World Series trophies were going to be at our city hall today, so we high-tailed it over there to get a glimpse, which got me thinking…

Alex, and really all Bostonians thus forth (is that a real phrase?), will never know the pain and agony of watching the Red Sox continually disappoint him. How will we try to explain to him that the Red Sox weren’t always the hottest ticket in town, and didn’t always have the biggest stars, and you couldn’t always say, “Man, the Yankees haven’t won a World Series since last century.” Alas, the times they are a’changin’.

They have a great playground in the Common, and we saw the Swan Boats, the statue of Make Way for Ducklings, and lots of other great things. We’ve been reading Alex a book called Good Night, Boston!, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to show him all the things we read about.

It was actually a lot of fun. They rented out the tumbling room where we got to run around, sing songs, and climb all over things.

[flickr photo=2471210364]

[flickr photo=2471215110]

[flickr photo=2471216642]

After playing in the tumbling room, Evangeline’s grandmother sang a bunch of interactive songs that all the little babies and moms played instruments, clapped, and sang to. Best of all for Alex, he got to see all of his yoga friends outside of yoga. We met a lot of the daddies, who aren’t able to go to yoga, and saw some kids who weren’t in Alex’s class anymore. Oh ya, and of course, there was cake.

Since mommy and daddy felt guilty for leaving Alex home on Valentine’s Day (not by himself or anything, but still), the Tarves clan took a trip down to Boston to visit the New England Aquarium. Alex loved the fish so much at the doctor’s office, we thought this would be a great activity for a Friday afternoon.

It started off kinda rough – as Alex decided to have a bit of a diaper blowout, forcing mommy to go through all kinds of contortions to change him in the back seat of the car – but we all had a great time.

The first thing we saw was the jellyfish exhibit that was there for a limited time. Alex really seemed to like watching the jellies float up and down through the water. They had a lot of cool lighting effects that made it a pretty neat exhibit.

The centerpiece of the New England Aquarium is the giant ocean tank with the wraparound ramp that allows you to walk all around the tank, up to the 4th level. In front of that tank is the penguin exhibit. We spent a little time looking at the penguins, and saved the ocean tank for later.

After seeing the penguins, we looked at the smaller tanks, and played in the tidal pool. The tidal pool is where you can touch all kinds of low-maintenance sea life like starfish, clams, and other weird stuff. Mommy picked up a bunch, and made daddy touch them – against his will.

By the time we got around to the ocean tank, Alex was pretty tired. He saw the gigantic sea turtles, the shark, and a huge eel. We took him out of the backpack, and he fell asleep right in mommy’s arms. It was a really awesome day, and Alex seemed to like the tanks that had a lot of bright colors and fast-moving fish (as is to be expected). We will definitely be back there again as he grows up.

Last night, Grammy Jane babysat so mommy and daddy could go out to dinner. We found a detailed confession on the table when we got home:

Awesome…Mom and Dad just left. Grammy and I are heading upstairs to get a new bum. Grammy Jane’s singing the “New Bum” song to me. Wanna new bum, duh duh…one that don’t got a crack, duh duh… She just grabbed Goodnight Moon and we’re going back downstairs.

We’re heading into the kitchen so Grammy Jane can make a peanut butter & banana sandwich and get some milk. That sandwich looks yucky. Ahhh..that flash is bright. Grammy Jane is taking pictures to send to Aunty Danielle. We’re sitting on the floor and Grammy Jane’s holding me so we can read Goodnight Moon while she eats that gross sandwich.

I can’t take it anymore…BLLLLLAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! Crap, now my dinner is all over the place. At least I hit Grammy Jane with most of it. Look, it’s on her pants, the rug, and the chair. Dude..I even made a puddle in the cuff of her jeans. I’m pretty good at this.

[flickr photo=2468053130]

Back upstairs…”New Bum” song again. New diaper, new onesie, new jammies. I think she’s trying to figure out if I’m done spewing before she cleans it up. Look, it’s still sitting there. Grammy said she’s bringing extra clothes next time. Is she telling me it’s okay to keep throwing up on her? Nice, a masochist. She said she doesn’t mind being stinky and wet because she loves me so much and that’s a small price to pay to be with me. Now I feel bad.

10:37 am: Began washing him.

10:48 am: Finished washing him, began drying him.

10:49 am: While laying on the counter, Alex pees. The stream goes over his head onto the stand mixer.

10:51 am: All of the pee is cleaned off of him.

10:52 am: Lay Alex down to put a diaper on and get dressed.

10:54 am: Diaper is finally on.

10:55 am: Major poo-splosion in the new diaper.

10:56 am: While changing diaper (again), Alex pees (again), this time not really clearing his head, mostly getting on his chest and neck.

10:56 am: Daddy sighs.

10:58 am: Alex is done bathing, but is arguably dirtier than when he started.
